19. Creature from the Black Lagoon – TFA

“It’s even uglier from close up,” Sari commented as she leaned a little over the railway, only to be deftly caught by the collar of her dress and forced back by Captain Fanzone, who was frowning.

“What did I told you already about getting too close, kid?” he grumbled. “Those things are anything but safe, and you have no business nearby!”

“Hey, relax, Captain, I got my own bodyguards with me!” Sari gestured to the pair of Autobots who were also watching the creature in the aquarium at a short distance from them. Mouth agape, Bumblebee could only shake his head in disbelief.

“Primus on a pogo stick, I didn’t know Meltdown made them that big!”

“Indeed,” Prowl murmured with a raised optic ridge. “I do not believe this shark-like creature was that big when we first encountered it.”

“What did he do? Feed him growth hormones?”

“Or most likely, tweaked their DNA further,” the Cyber-ninja commented as Sari and the Captain joined them. “I trust you will be able to contain this… creature without further help from our part?”

“Sure, sure, no biggie,” the Captain waved asides, though he was clearly sarcastic. “You know, the guys at the department were feeling humorous. Did you know they decided to give it a name?”

“Indeed, Captain?” Prowl asked. “And what should that be?”

For all answer, the human gestured at one side of the aquarium, where someone had painted in bright red letters the words ‘Black’s Lagoon Creature: beware!’. Sari couldn’t help it; she guffawed.

“I think I love your men, captain!”

Crush aside, I think Fanzone’s kind of an underrated character

Like….they could have just made him the bumbling cop trope, or worse, the stick in the mud, by-the-book cop trope who’s only there to serve as an antagonist for the main characters…..

image

…But they didn’t. Sure he’s comic relief, but he’s just a genuinely good guy and a great character.

image

He’s like a big papa-bear to Sari, despite the fact that she’s constantly teasing him and he doesn’t even like kids.

image

He’s smart enough to not only remember that Cybertronians fear organic germs, but to also seek out the local sleezeball and use that fear against him.

image

He cares about protecting his city so much that he’s willing to go up against GIANT ALIEN ROBOTS to do his job.

image

And he can put aside his machine-hate whenever the Autobots need him, or vise-versa.

image

Plus, HE PUNCHED A FUCKING MUTATED BAT-MONSTER A LEAST 10 FEET TALLER THAN HIM IN THE FUCKING FACE.

image

And yeah, I DO love the fact that he IS prejudice against the bots at first (which is slightly justified, since they DO wreck his city on a daily basis)…but ya’know what? He gets over it. And I LIKE that in this show literally EVERYONE has their own mini character arc where they start out one way and end up another.

Also, he has a thick Canadian accent for some reason and…okay, yeah, how many tough, badass Canadian characters in American cartoons can YOU think of?

So yeah. Props to Captain Fanzone’s character.

Stay awesome, Carmine.
