Subaru FF-1 1300G 4WD Van, 1971. The Subaru Leone 4WD Station Wagon may have been the first production all-wheel-drive version of a standard estate model but it was not Subaru’s first 4WD wagon. In 1970, a Subaru dealership received a special order request from the Tohoku Electric Power Company for the Subaru 1000 station wagon be converted from front-wheel drive to 4WD. Given the design of the drivetrain being used in Subaru, it was considered relatively easy to simply attach a driveshaft to the back of the transmission and add a rear differential to power the rear wheels. In March 1971, two prototypes were used to test a 4WD system using the rear differential from a Nissan Bluebird 510 series. The tests were a success and on October 29, 1971, a Subaru 1300G Van (station wagon) with the 4WD system installed was displayed at the 18th Tokyo Motor Show. The station wagon also had a 20 mm increase in ground clearance. Subaru made 8 wagons with 4WD, Tohoku Electric purchased 5 with the remaining 3 being delivered to the Village of Hakuba for government use in Nagano Prefecture. In 2008, Subaru located one of the original eight wagons. The car was restored to its original condition and is displayed at various events in Japan.
